Glucose is the main source of energy for humans and animals alike. It is basically a sugar type that travels through our bloodstream and entering our body cells after eating something that contains sugar or carbohydrates. Normal glucose levels in humans is regulated by two hormones glucagon and insulin. Insulin, the absence of which is primarily responsible for causing diabetes, is produced by our pancreas and is then released into our bloodstream when there is a rise in body glucose levels.

Normal glucose levels in diabetics should be around 70-150 mg/dL. Blood glucose levels are usually lower in the morning before breakfast and it tends to rise after every meal. When the blood glucose levels are consistently above the 150 mark, it is an indication of high blood sugar or hyperglycemia or diabetes. Chronic low levels of blood glucose, on the other hand, is an indication of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. Both of these conditions are potentially fatal.

It is very important to have blood glucose meters handy in order to keep track of the rise and fall of blood glucose levels regularly. Diabetes blood glucose tends to fluctuate a lot with time and with every meal. Even if you are on a diet for diabetes, you might notice considerable fluctuations in your meter recordings.

Due to fluctuating blood glucose levels, a person can experience many diabetes symptoms including irritability, lethargy, weakness, lack of consciousness, disturbed mental functionality etc. Persistent rise in the blood sugar levels can as well result in kidney, eye and nerve damage.

In order to avoid such side effects, regular and persistent diabetes monitoring becomes very essential. There are certain tests that can be done for monitoring the blood glucose levels. In fact, there are 2 major tests to be done for checking the blood glucose levels:

- The Fasting Blood Glucose Level
- The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

The first test is done after a complete fast for about 12 hours. It is usually done in the morning. If the result shows a value that is greater than 140 mg/dL, you are actually diabetic.

The later is done by preventing the patient from drinking any fluid including water for 10 hours. Blood is taken from the veins and the patient is given some glucose drink after which blood is taken once again after 30 minutes.

Diabetes causes many common symptoms that can indicate someone is developing the condition. Frequent urination, increased desire to drink water and slow healing of sores and frequent infections are common signs of this ever growing condition. While the causes of diabetes are still not clear, there are many medications and healthy diet plans to help you in coping with the disease. Nonetheless, if you are still not satisfied, you would either need to get yourself tested from time to time or have a glucose meter at hand for diabetes monitoring.

Normal glucose levels in diabetics also tend to vary according to the guidelines of many associations like the American College of Endocrinology, Diabetes UK and the American Diabetes Association. Therefore, instead of following what everyone is saying about this medical condition and end up getting totally confused, try and follow what your doctor, diabetic nurse and dietician recommends for maintaining your good health.
