Diabetes And Exercise

Exercise is one of the most important part of a diabetes treatment plan. In order to avoid any potential problems, it is extremely important to check your blood glucose level before, during and after exercise sessions.

Diabetes and exercise are supposed to be intimately linked to one another, at least when you are trying to manage your blood sugar levels. Exercise helps you in improving your blood glucose control while boosting your overall fitness, thereby reducing the risks associated with heart disease and nerve damage.

But there are certain challenges to exercising. Most people find it very difficult to maintain an exercise regime for any length of time or long enough to do them any long-term good. Remembering to faithfully keep track of blood sugar levels before, during and after the exercise session is also a challenge in its own right. This record, if kept properly, will actually reveal how well your body is responding to exercise and how you can actually prevent blood sugar fluctuation.

Diabetes statistics reveals that people who have started exercising after being diagnosed with diabetes have responded effectively than those who relied on medications alone. However, before you jump into any fitness program, you need to talk to your doctor about the kind of exercise regime that will fit your personal situation and do you the most good health-wise.

For best results, you need to include a diabetic diet plan and combine it with regular exercise for more than 3 hours every week. These exercises can include brisk walking, bicycling, swimming and other intense activities.

However, if you are under certain medication, you will need to be extra careful about exercising. In such cases, you will have to practice those exercises that have been recommended by the doctor as insulin medications causes the blood sugar levels to dip. You must test your numbers every 30 minutes. This will further help you in determining if your blood sugar number is stable, fluctuating or abnormally high.

Before embarking on any exercise program, consider some of these guidelines:

• If the blood sugar level is below 100 mg/dL – It is too low to start an exercise. Eat carbohydrates to stabilize the level and then exercise.

• 100-250 mg/dL – Pre-exercise, this is the perfect blood sugar level for an individual. You can go ahead.

• 250-300 mg/dL- While the starting point is the warning zone, the 300 mark is too high for any exercise. It could as well increase your chance of developing ketoacidosis. Delay your workout routine to avoid any complication.

During exercise, on the other hand, if you feel any of the diabetes symptoms such as shakiness, nervous or confused, check your blood sugar levels immediately. If it is below normal, stop exercising and take some fruit juice or sugary foods. Candies can also be a good choice. Recheck the blood sugar levels after 15 minutes, if it’s still low, you must cancel your exercise program and have some more carbohydrate and then test the levels once again till the time it reaches its normal state.

After exercise, check the blood sugar levels immediately. Repeat checking after every hour to see where you stand. Exercise uses the stored sugar present in your liver and muscles. As the body rebuilds the stored sugar, it tends to take sugar from the blood. The more strenuous activities you practice, the more your blood sugar reserve will be affected.

If your blood sugar level dips after exercise, take some carbohydrate enriched food or snack like crackers, juices etc. Exercise for diabetics is indispensable. However, there are certain factors that must be considered by every diabetic before exercising regularly.
